Matthews, 18, did something unprecedented for a projected number one draft pick and went overseas to play with the ZSC Lions in his draft year. In his first season at pro level, he scored 24 goals and 25 assists in 40 games.

Patrik Laine (Tappara Tampere), drafted by the Winnipeg Jets, and - a small surprise - Pierre-Luc Dubois (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles), selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets, finished off the top three of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. All other first round selections can be found here.(mso)
