The two hockey players are among a group of six athletes that are up for the award.

Alina Müller, a member of the new PHWL team based in Boston, is nominated as MVP of the year in the 2023 Swiss Sports Awards. This spring, the 25-year-old became the all-time leading scorer for her former university squad, the Northeastern Huskies. Besides that, she was once again nominated for the Patty Kazmaier Award, her fifth time in as many years in the NCAA.

The New Jersey Devils' Nico Hischier is also nominated for the MVP of the year award. He has been the NHL team's captain since 2020. Last season, the 24-year-old put up a personal best in points, recording 32 goals and 55 assists in 93 games.

Among the other nominees are football players Manuel Akanji (Manchester City) and Ana-Maria Crnogorčević (Atlético Madrid), volleyball player Laura Künzler (Nilüfer Bursa) and handball goalie Nikola Portner (SC Magdeburg).
