National League

The number of 34-year-old former SC Bern forward was supposed to be retired this season. Alain Berger, however, has decided to forgo this honour.

Marc Lüthi confirmed in October that Alain Berger's number would be raised to the rafters. However, as he now tells Klaus Zaugg ("Watson"), Berger has decided to not accept this honor: "He has now officially informed us that he is forgoing this honor - even though he meets all the criteria. He told us that his jersey doesn't belong under the hall roof. That would be too much of an honor.”

Berger is a product of SC Bern's organization and, with the exception of three and a half seasons in North America (OHL and AHL), had only ever played for SC Bern. In over 550 National League games, he recorded 31 goals and 45 assists. He won four championships and two cups with the Bears.
