As the Swiss League teams receive less money from broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals in general, and costs for infrastructure, games, and practices have increased, they have been facing financial hardship.
Rolf Löhrer, EHC Winterthur's main shareholder and the president of the board of directors, has been covering the Swiss League team's deficit for years. He is, however, no longer willing or able to do so and is thus ready to sell a majority of his shares if necessary to ensure "a future for EHC Winterthur." If the team does not find a solution by the end of the year, they might have to withdraw from the Swiss League.
