After their contract ran out, the 98th edition will be taking place without the long-standing participant.

Ever since 1984, Team Canada has been a fixture at the Spengler Cup. No more - this winter, for the 98th edition, there will be no selection wearing a Maple Leaf on their chest. Contractual talks have taken longer than expected, and other potential participants needed answers.
Whether the Canadians will return to the tournament in the future remains to be seen. There are ongoing talks to make that happen.
