"Goran Bezina brought immeasurable emotions to the fans for 15 years and his memory will live forever," the club says in a statement. "When we think of him, we also think of his number 57."
As a consequence, the club is going to retire his number so that no one will be able to wear it after their former defender and captain. A move that comes as no surprise: "It was always a given that once Goran Bezina's career ended, his number would be hung in the Vernets."
For the past three seasons, the now 42-year-old suited up for HC Sierre in the Swiss League. This summer, Bezina decided to retire as a player and continue his career as an assistant coach in Sierre. Over the course of his active career, he played 1020 games in the two top leagues in Switzerland, the majority for Genève-Servette HC.
