If the NHL Players' Association would have decided to reopen the CBA with the NHL, a new version of this contract had to be signed no later than September 2020, otherwise, there could have been a lockout for the 2020-21 season. However, the decision of the NHLPA to waive his right to this early renegotiation extends the duration of the current CBA until the end of the 2021-22 season.
