The Norris Trophy for the best defenseman in the NHL went to Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche. The vote was extremely close: Makar received 1631 points, Josi 1606. Although Josi received more first-place votes than Makar (98 over 92), it was not enough for the Swiss defender to win the trophy for the second time in his career.

Josi also did not get the Ted Lindsay Award, voted by the NHLPA for the most outstanding player. The award went to Toronto Maple Leafs forward and former member of the ZSC Lions, Auston Matthews. The 24-year-old also won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player, for which Josi came in sixth.

As a small consolation, Roman Josi was voted into the NHL's First All-Star Team alongside Norris Trophy winner Cale Makar (Colorado), forwards Auston Matthews (Toronto), Mitchell Marner (Toronto), and Johnny Gaudreau (Calgary), as well as goaltender Igor Shesterkin (New York Rangers), who won the Vezina Trophy.
