In order to cushion the financial blow and unpredictable consequences of the Coronavirus outbreak, the 2020-21 season could become another "special edition".

2020-21 season without relegation from the National League?

According to Watson's Klaus Zaugg, a motion will be discussed and voted on at the upcoming league assembly in mid-June that would save the twelve National League from being relegated next season. At the same time, it would allow a financially fit Swiss League Champion to be directly promoted to the National League, which would expand Switzerland's highest league to 13 teams as of the 2021-22 season.

The proposed measure is supposed to be limited to the 2020-21 season. It aims to reduce the financial expenses of the National League clubs that usually come along with the fight against relegation (change of coaches, import-player signings,...) and, through that, also minimize the risk of a financially not so well-hedged club of going bankrupt.

At the upcoming league assembly in mid-June, a three-quarters majority will be required to adopt this proposal.
