Plüss' statement in full length: "After last season and defending the title with SC Bern, my gut feeling told me that this could be the right moment to stop and change my priorities in life. I had reached my personal goal of playing up to 40 on top level. Due to the still existing performance capability, the great passion for hockey and various pending offers, it would have also been an attractive and easy option to continue playing. At the same time, I knew that I had to end at some point and I wanted to make this move by myself, so I decided to take a six-month break. I used this time to clarify for myself how a life without top-class sport feels and what to do next. I continued to practice, but also spent a lot of time with my family. And so, the initial gut feeling turned into the decision to end my career as a professional ice hockey player. True to the motto 'The best is always yet to come' I'm looking back on an incredibly inspiring and eventful time, but I'm also looking forward to seeing how things will continue. I will certainly continue to use the next few months to spend a lot of time with my family and to plan my future with her."

Martin Plüss made his National League debut with EHC Kloten during the 1994-95 season. After four years with Frölunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, he joined SC Bern in 2008. For the Bears, mostly as the team's captain, Plüss suited up in a total of 536 games, in which he managed to put up 194 goals and 216 assists. In addition, he took part in four Olympic games and twelve World Championships with the Swiss national team, playing in a total of 236 international games.
