National League

Chronic hip and back problems have plagued Patrick von Gunten for quite some time and have forced the 32-year-old defenseman to end his carrier.

The renewed pain and the associated massive restrictions on his musculoskeletal system were the reason for extensive examinations in the last few days. Unfortunately, the results do not allow him to continue his hockey career.

Patrick von Gunten went through the youth organization of EHC Biel, before he moved to Kloten during the 2005-06 season. In 2011, the defender spent one season abroad playing with Frölunda HC from the Swedish Hockey League, before he returned to Switzerland the following year to suit up for EHCK again.

Von Gunten appeared in a total of 548 National League games for EHC Kloten and managed to record 76 goals and 174 assists. Moreover, he played 94 games with Switzerland's national team (2x World Championships, 1x Olympics) and was part of the 2013 'Siver medal' team at the IIHF World Championships in Stockholm.

EHC Kloten will, of course, give Patrick von Gunten a proper farewell in due time and also screen the market to find an appropriate replacement for the defender.
