The 33-year-old arrives from the Kontinental Hockey League's Jokerit Helsinki and has signed a one-year contract with the Lakers. Gilroy is a two-time KHL All-Star (2015 and 2017) and was the league's top-scoring defenseman in this year's playoffs with eleven points in nine games. "Matt was our preferred candidate," Lakers coach Jeff Tomlinson says. "We were looking for a defenseman who can help us offensively, but who also completes our team in the defensive department."

Gilroy has played in the KHL since 2014. Before that, he appeared in 233 games in the NHL for the New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Florida Panthers. In this past season with Jokerit Helsinki, the 33-year-old suited up in 64 games and put up 38 points (eight goals, 30 assists).
