The 20-year-old forward would have had the opportunity to play in the NCAA in the next season but he decided to renounce his scholarship for the Mercyhurst University and join HC Ambrì-Piotta instead.
Smith played for the Hawkesbury Hawks of the Central Canada Hockey League for the past three seasons. This season, he recorded 29 goals and 30 assists in 60 games for them.
