Maxwell spent most of the last six years with different teams in the KHL, the latest being Spartak Moskva, and Liiga's Kärpät Oulu. Before heading to Europe, the 31-year-old was splitting time between NHL and AHL for five seasons, with the larger portion of appearances in the latter.
