The contract of Oliver David would have been valid until the end of the 2023-24 season. However, as the Journal de Jura reports, EHC Biel confirmed this weekend that the assistant coach will not honor his contract.
While nothing is confirmed yet, it is rumored that David will serve as the new head coach of Red Bull Salzburg. The Kronen Zeitung had already reported at the beginning of April that he is one of the candidates for the position.
EHC Biel will thus have to look for a successor for him. However, that is not their first priority as Martin Steinegger tells the Bieler Tagblatt: "We now have to resolve the sporting issue with Antti Törmänen. Then we will see."
Törmänen has once again been diagnosed with cancer and coached the team in the playoffs whilst doing his first round of chemotherapy. Whether he will be able to coach the team next season remains to be seen.
As Steinegger told the SonntagsBlick, they will talk with Törmänen over the course of the next weeks and ask for his opinion on the subject matter. His opinion will, however, not be the only decisive factor: "The board of directors is always involved in regard to the coaching position at EHC Biel. But Antti's answer will be the basis for how we want to proceed."
