The 24-year-old played several years with his youth team Linköping HC in the SHL, before he finally moved overseas in 2014. There, the 2011 fifth round pick of the Detroit Red Wings suited up for several AHL teams, including the Grand Rapid Griffins, Texas Stars, and most recently the Hershey Bears (on loan).

This past term, Bäckman, who is described as an offensive-defender, managed to score 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in a total of 46 AHL games for the Stars and Bears. With the signing of Bäckman, EHC Kloten's defensive roster for the 2017-18 season is complete, the club announces.
