Steinauer went through the youth organization of EHC Kloten and made his National League debut with them in the 2014-15 season. In 2016, he then joined EHC Winterthur on a one-year contract, before he moved on to HC Ajoie the following summer.
For the Ajoulots this season, Steinauer completed a total of 55 games, in which he managed to put up three goals and eleven assists, while posting an overall plus-11 rating.
