Mark Streit cleared waivers today, after he was put on it by the Montreal Canadiens 24 hours ago. According to TVA's Renaud Lavoie, however, Streit won't report to the Habs' AHL affiliate in Laval.

Instead, the 39-year-old defender will take the next few days to evaluate his options. But, what exactly are his options? After he cleared regular waivers today, the Canadiens could put him back on unconditional waivers with the aim of mutually terminating the one-year deal signed in July. He would then be a free agent again, and theoretically be able to sign with another team in Europe, Switzerland - or elsewhere.

Several sources from North America speculated today that Streit would decide to turn his back on the NHL/AHL and return to Switzerland, from where he might target a run at the upcoming Winter Olympics. Streit, for his part, pointed out multiple times in the past that a return to the National League is not an option for him. Therefore, an announcement to retire following his evaluation time is certainly possible.
