The Swiss winger's current contract will expire after this season. The Hurricanes want to re-sign him, according to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

"We want to keep him. He is an important part of the team, hard-working, flexible, a true leader," Carolina Hurricanes' General Manager Don Waddel tells the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Apparently, the club is already in talks with Niederreiter. They want to make things clear: "The sooner we know, the better," Waddel says to the newspaper.

Niederreiter was traded to Carolina about three years ago from the Minnesota Wild (5.25 Million Dollars per season). This year thus far, the 29-year-old winger suited up in 15 games, scoring four goals and collecting three assists.
