After rumors have come up about a possible participation of the Russian and Canadian national team at next year's Spengler Cup ahead of the Olympic Games, Spengler Cup CEO Marc Gianola says: "The Spengler Cup is a club-tournament and remains a club-tournament." For next year, he is planning with a Finnish team and again one or two teams from the KHL.

However, he does not exclude that an exception to the "club-tournament" is possible. "But until it is clear if the NHL will allow their players to participate in the Olympic Games, one cannot say anything about that," he clarifies. What is clear, however, is that a Russian national team would not take part with the best possible team: "If a Russian team participates, then only as a sort of U-23 team," he says. "The KHL won't take the top stars out of their championship just for us."

Moreover, with the participation of the Swiss national team next year, Gianola also has a clear opinion for which team Davos' members of the Swiss national team will play at the next Spengler Cup: "For HCD. No question about that."
