The young forward is thus set to become the third Swiss in the history of the Winterhawks. He follows in the footsteps of Nino Niederreiter, who suited up for the Winterhawks between 2009 and 2011, and Sven Bärtschi (2010 to 2012). After their time in Portland, both were picked in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft: Niederreiter as fifth overall by the New York Islanders, Bärtschi as 13th overall by the Calgary Flames.

In the past two seasons, Schwenninger suited up for EV Zug's youth organisation. Last year, the now 17-year-old played for EVZ's Elite Novizen for which he recorded 18 goals and 49 points in 28 games. He also appeared in 29 games with Zug's Elite-A (five goals and eight points). Schwenniger will be eligible for the NHL Entry Draft for the first time in 2019.
