Schmid was drafted in June's CHL Import Draft as 20th overall by the Lethbridge Hurricanes from the Western Hockey League (WHL) and also in the NHL Entry Draft as 134th overall by the New Jersey Devils.

Shortly after the drafts, by the end of June, Swiss media reported that Schmid was looking for a change of air and that his agent was closing in on a deal with Lethbridge, although the 18-year-old still has two years left on his development contract with the SCL Tigers.

Schmid is already the fifth Swiss youngster who wants to take his chance in the Canadian Hockey League. Also Valentin Nussbaumer (Shawinigan Cataractes, QMJHL), Nando Eggenberger (Oshawa Generals, OHL), Dean Schwenninger (Portland Winterhawks, WHL) and David Aebischer (Gatineau Olympics, QMJHL) decided to move across the Atlantic Ocean.

CHL (Canadian Hockey League) is the parent organization that represents the three Canadian-based major junior leagues WHL (Western Hockey League), OHL (Ontarian Hockey League) and QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League).
