Nico Hischier made history when his name was called first by the New Jersey Devils in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft in June, making him the first Swiss player ever to be drafted first overall. The 18-year-old center, who is a product of EHC Visp and SC Bern, also had a quite impressive start into his very first season in the National Hockey League. Along with Taylor Hall on the Devils' first line, Hischier has managed to put up five goals and 15 assists in 29 games so far.

Roman Josi, on the other hand, was nominated in the category "Sportsman of the Year" but lost out to Roger Federer, who added Grand Slam Title number 18 (Melbourne) and 19 (Wimbledon) to his record this year. The 27-year-old defenseman led the Nashville Predators into the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history and was named the team's Captain for the 2017-18 season in mid-September this year. After Mark Streit, Josi is only the second Swiss player in history to captain an NHL team.
