Salonen has worked as a referee in the Finnish Liiga for nine years and appeared in a total of 416 games. Already at the age of 21 he made his debut in Finland's highest league as the youngest referee in the Liiga's history.
He has already worked at the U18 and U20 World Championships and was also nominated for the IIHF Worlds in 2017 in Germany, as well as this year's Olympic Games in PyeongChang and last year's Spengler Cup in Davos.
Swedish referee Marcus Vinnerborg, who suffered a concussion during practice in December, is still not able to hit the ice. His return is still unforeseeable.
