The question whether transgender people are allowed to play in the Swiss hockey leagues did not come up until the 32-year-old Fabienne Peter, a woman who was born in a man's body, wanted to suit up for EHC Basel's women's team, the BZ Basel writes.

The SIHF looked into the matter and decided to also let transgender people of both sexes take part in the Swiss hockey leagues. "Everyone agreed," the SIHF told the BZ Basel. "The amendment was adopted unanimously."

The only requirement is that the player meets the criteria of the 'Transgender Guidelines' of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It says that trans women are allowed to play after twelve months of hormone replacement therapy and a successful hormone test. For trans men - men who were born in women's bodies - there are no such requirements.

Fabienne Peter has already met all these requirements and is allowed to start the season with the EHC Basel women's team. As the first trans woman in the history of Swiss ice hockey.
