As IIHF president René Fasel confirms to watson's Klaus Zaugg, Christian Hofstetter will be the Federation's new 'Sport Director'. HC Fribourg-Gottéron's ex-captain thus suceeds Dave Fitzpatrick, who is set to retire.

The position of the 'Sport Director' within the International Ice Hockey Federation is comparable with the team manager position in a club, meaning that Hofstetter will be the key figure when it comes to the elaboration of rule changes and other measures regarding the development of the ice hockey. Besides IIHF president Fasel, he will have the biggest influence on designing the ice hockey, Zaugg points out.

As like Fasel, Christian Hofstetter, 50, grew up in Fribourg. During the era of Bykov and Khomutov between 1989 and 1996, he led HC Fribourg-Gottéron as captain, before he hung up his skates in 2002 and moved to the marketing business. Hofstetter has been working as head of communications and marketing at the IIHF in the past few years.
