Vītoliņš, who coached HC Davos for the remainder of the 2018-19 season after Arno Del Curto was fired, was part of Spartak Moskva's coaching staff for the last two years. He will now take over the Latvian national team on their quest to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

His predecessor, Bob Hartley, was the team's head coach since 2016. In 2018, he also took over coaching duties with Avangard Omsk in the KHL. As the Latvian hockey federation writes, the Canadian will no longer be part of their men's team due to a busy schedule with Omsk.
