El Assaoui had to be stretchered off the ice in the second half of the third period of Sunday night's game in Visp (1-2 win) after his achilles tendon was cut by a skate blade of an opposing player.
Due to the injury-caused absence of El Assaoui, whose recovery process will take at least three months, HC Thurgau will screen the market to find an appropriate replacement for the defenseman.
The 26-year-old returned to HC Thurgau from MySports League's HC Sion-Nendaz 4 Vallées in mid-December last year. In 18 games for the Lions ever since, he has managed to put up seven assists.
