In the future, the qualification from the national leagues will be mostly based on the standings at the end of the regular season. The league champions will still be the first seeds, followed by the regular season winners, the runners-up, the third-placed team, the fourth-placed team and the fifth-placed team.
The CHL-champion from the previous season will still be automatically qualified, with no additional spot granted to the respective league.
Five of the six founding leagues will be affected by this change, with the exception of the EBEL. This is due to the Austrian league's format.
The CHL's board has agreed to this change with the goal to make the criteria easier to understand for fans and journalists.
