IIHF World Championship

For the World Championships in Denmark in May, head coach Patrick Fischer received positive answers from nine NHL players - in case of an early eliminiation from the playoffs.

According to the Aargauer Zeitung, only Luca Sbisa of the Vegas Golden Knights and Sven Bärtschi of the Vancouver Canucks would not be able or willing to join the team. While Denis Malgin should be at Fischer's disposal because the Florida Panthers missed the playoffs, nine more players could travel to Denmark in case of an early elimination in the playoffs.

These nine candidates are Roman Josi, Kevin Fiala, Yannick Weber (all Nashville Predators), Nico Hischier, Mirco Müller (both New Jersey Devils), Sven Andrighetto (Colorado Avalanche), Nino Niederreiter (Minnesota Wild), Timo Meier (San Jose Sharks), and Dean Kukan (Columbus Blue Jackets).

Whereas it seems rather unlikely that Josi, Fiala, and Weber's Predators will be eliminated in the first round against the Colorado Avalanche or anytime soon at all, the Avalanche's Andrighetto could thus become a safe bet for Fischer. Hopes for Nico Hischier could also be realistic: although the New Jersey Devils managed to clinch a playoff berth, they are the clear underdog against the Tampa Bay Lightning. According to the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Hischier said that he has not yet thought about how he would decide in case the Devils drop out of the playoffs in Round 1.
