IIHF World Championship

Rather than simply canceling this year's events due to the Covid-19, the IIHF is trying to postpone them to the next year.

The IIHF's strategy, supposedly, is to try staging at the same venue next year the tournaments that currently have to be canceled. For the World Championships, however, this would have considerable consequences as IIHF president René Fasel tells the Tages-Anzeiger: for instance, the 2025 edition in Sweden and Denmark would shift to 2026, an Olympic year, causing possibly lesser interest.

Nevertheless, simply canceling the Worlds 2020 in Switzerland without staging them again in the Swiss Confederation next year would be a hard blow for the country and the local hockey movement. Such an important decision must be, therefore, taken during the IIHF Congress, which usually takes place towards the end of May, after the World Championship. In any case, the decision on whether or not to play the 2020 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland in May will be taken in mid-April at the latest.
