As stated by René Fasel, president of the IIHF, "unfortunately, at this time no major decisions related to the status of 2020 IIHF World Championship could be taken”.

The IIHF remains therefore in close contact with the Swiss authorities and the insurance company to monitor the Coronavirus situation, although Fasel revealed to the Associated Press that "today if you ask me, there is no chance we can skate. It's just a question of time."

While the IIHF has not yet officially canceled the World Championship, IIHF vice president Kalervo Kummola reveals to the Finnish news outlet Iltalehti that it is just a matter of time before they will: "We are awaiting the decision of the Swiss authorities, but it is already certain: the World Championship will not be played this spring."

This year’s edition of the World Championships is supposed to take place in Zürich and in Lausanne from May 8 to May 24.
