The 24-year-old forward joins his compatriots from the Tampa Bay Lightning's AHL-affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, who are currently facing the St. John's IceCaps in Round 1 of the 2017 Calder Cup playoffs. The Crunch allowed him to leave, as several players were before him on their depth chart.

"Tanner was not part of our team right now. He was not a regular player for us,'' said Syracuse coach Ben Groulx to syracuse.com. He added that while he liked Tanner, he had a team to run and thus they were using the guys they felt helped them the most. This term, Richard suited up in three NHL games for the Lightning as well as 47 games for the Crunch, scoring 14 goals and 20 assists.
