WOMEN'S LEAGUE

There is a new leader in the SWHL A: last year’s runner-up HC Lugano is now the frontrunner, thanks to a 4-1 victory on home ice against the defending champions, the ZSC Lions. Moreover, EV BOMO Thun secured three points against Reinach and is once again in the fourth spot.

In an exciting and even matchup, the Ticinese sealed the deal in the third period. The Swiss-Canadian Rebeca Kohler gave her team the lead in the 35th minute with her 22nd goal of the season. Zurich’s Angela Taylor equalized the score in the 46th minute. But, not even a minute later, Laura Desboeufs put Lugano back in front. Kohler and Desboeufs scored another goal each –two empty-netters– in the last two minutes. This was Lugano’s second victory over the ZSC Lions this season. The Lions only managed to win against the Bianconere once on home ice.

The Neuchâtel Hockey Academy, however, are on their tail thanks to victories against the bottom clubs SC Weinfelden (11-1) and SC Reinach (6-0). Now, they are three and five points behind Lugano and Zurich.

In the battle for the last playoff spot, BOMO Thun is in front once again. The Bernese beat the inferior team from Reinach, which still has zero points, and profited from Weinfelden’s two losses. This coming Sunday, the two teams will play the decisive game against each other – at a rather peculiar time: Sunday morning, 9:30 AM.
