IIHF World Junior Championship

The Swiss U20 national team won a tight game against Austria 3-2. In the quarterfinal, they are going to face Canada.

The Swiss needed a win out of the last game of the preliminary round in order to advance to the quarterfinal. The game started off badly for the Swiss, as Leon Wallner scored the first goal of the game for Austria. With a bit more than two minutes to go in the first period, Joshua Fahrni then tied the game.

The second period also saw each team scoring once: Jonas Taibel for Switzerland and Ian Scherzer for Austria. The game remained tied until five minutes before the end of the third period, when Attilio Biasca beat Austrian goaltender Sebastian Wraneschitz on the power play.

Biasca thus ensured that Switzerland will play at least one more game in the tournament. Marco Bayer's team will face Canada, the winner of Group A, on Thursday morning at 1:00 (CET).
