Gary Bettman, the NHL's commissioner, is not overly optimistic about sending their players to the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

"We have real concerns about whether or not it's sensible to be participating," Gary Bettman said during his annual press conference before the Stanley Cup Final. According to Bettman, the main points, which have to be resolved, are safety and logistical concerns.

Another problem is the tightening time frame. "We're already past the time that we hoped this would be resolved," Bettman explained. The NHL plans on releasing their schedule for the upcoming season - with or without an Olympic break - before the NHL Draft on July 23.

René Fasel, president of the IIHF, has not given up hope, though. "Things are going back and forth, but no stress. We'll see," Fasel told the news agency Associated Press (AP) when asked about the state of things. "I cannot speak for the NHL and I just hope they will say they will come."

The 2022 Olympic Winter Games will take place from February 4 to February 20 in China's capital city Beijing.
