The bronze medal game of the women's hockey tournament between Finland and Switzerland has been a tight one even though the final score, 4-0 for the Finns, might suggest otherwise. After two periods, the score was, in fact, 1-0 (Viivi Vainikka), although Finland had clearly outshot Switzerland with 34 shots on goal against nine.
In the third period, Finland found early on a shorthanded goal with Susanna Tapani and then two more powerplay goals (Nelli Laitinen and Michelle Karvinen) to seal the deal. Switzerland was not able to turn the game around and thus could not win the bronze medal as they did eight years ago.
As reported by 20 Minuten, goaltender Andrea Brändli was understandably disappointed when interviewed by SRF after the game: "It can't be put into words, it was a tough game, a close fight. The team fought well, but it was not to be. It takes some time to digest that" the 24-year-old commented. "It's an incredible shame, fourth place is cruel" Brändli added.
