Olympic Games

The dream of a second Olympic medal after Sotschi 2014 is over. The Swiss women's national team loses 2-6 against the Olympic Athletes from Russia. They lose against an opponent that was not better, but more efficient.

The Swiss ladies did not play badly, but they definitely lacked the confidence they had shown in their third preliminary round game against Sweden. They lost in the most important of all games so far this tournament due to poor efficiency on their chances and because of their own defensive mistakes. The worst of those (Lara Stalder losing the puck at the offensive blueline on a 5-on-3) led to Switzerland being on the chase, despite being up by a goal temporarily.

Goals two to four by the Russians were also scored after grave mistakes in front of the Swiss net. While the Swiss created high danger scoring chances again in the third period, including a shot that hit the post, the goals for this ultimately too decisive victory were scored by the Olympic Athletes from Russia.

With this win, the Russians were able to get revenge for losing in the quarterfinals in Sotschi. Back then, they came into the game with the confidence from three wins in the lower group and fell short of the Swiss, who had lost their preliminary round-games, but were able to win because they were used to a higher game-pace.

After this loss, Switzerland will play for the 5th place in the tournament. The next game is already on Sunday (4:10 am CET) against Korea.
