National League

As the Journal de Jura reports, Gianni Ehrensperger has decided to put an end to his professional hockey career. The forward has not received an offer for a contract extension from EHC Biel.

The 31-year-old forward missed a great amount of games the last three seasons due to injuries and mostly due to concussions, the latest of which he suffered on loan with SC Langenthal in February. He thus decided that enough is enough and put an end to his career.

"I hope the league protects their players more in the future. There are too many head injuries", tells Ehrensperger the Bieler Tagblatt. "It's bad for the game, for the players and for the insurance companies. It will only stop if those hits get punished with longer suspensions." Ehrenspeger is only one of over 50 players in the NLA who suffered a concussion this season. For a condensed list, have a look here.

Ehrenspeger is a product of EHC Kloten's organisation and played his first professional game with them in the 2003-04 season. In 2008, he then joined EHC Biel and was part of the team that managed to get promoted to the NLA. In 502 NLA games, he scored 63 goals and 89 assists. (mso)
