This season, the NHL has a new overtime-format in which both teams only play with three players during overtime. At today's League Assembly, the Swiss clubs have decided to introduce this system next year.


For now, the new 3-on-3 overtime will only be played during the regular season, SRF reports. In the playoffs, the 20-minute overtime with five players on each side will remain.

In the NHL, the 3-on-3 overtime is one of the most discussed rule changes this season. As Rob Vollman writes on, "the switch from 4-on-4 to 3-on-3 has proven to be an effective way to increase scoring and reduce the number of games that require the shootout to resolve."
