Tim Berni's rights still belong to the Columbus Blue Jackets. As he is an unsigned RFA, he will have to sign a contract with the Jackets until December 1 or sign an offer sheet from another NHL team to play in the NHL this season.
Berni might, however, also decide to return to Switzerland. The 23-year-old defenseman played 59 regular-season games for the Blue Jackets last season, recording one goal and two assists.
