The 64-year-old Valais succeeds Florian Kohler, who already left Swiss Ice Hockey as CEO at the end of November this year.

The 2020 IIHF World Championship will be hosted by Switzerland with venues in Zurich and Lausanne. Florian Kohler, who currently chairs the organizing committee, has decided to announce his resignation at the upcoming board meeting on December 27.

Jean-Marie Viaccoz, Kohler's successor, was president of the Regio League from 1999 until the merger with Swiss Ice Hockey and has been vice president of the youth and amateur sports since June 2011. Since the beginning of January, 2017, he has also been prefect of the district of Sierre.
