Swiss Ice Hockey

The National Council wants to loan money directly to sports teams instead of leagues, thus removing joint liability for all clubs.

Swiss hockey clubs could soon directly apply for federal aid.

During a debate on the new national COVID-law, the National Council made several adjustments to the sports-aid paragraph. 150 Million francs in interest-free loans were made available to support Swiss ice hockey, the leagues were supposed to create a solidarity-based fund for future risks, something that the clubs strongly opposed to.

Instead of the leagues applying for loans on behalf of the clubs, the National Council wants to allow clubs to apply for themselves directly. The loans could be as much as 25% of the club's expenses during the 2018-19 season.

Clubs would have to put a 25% collateral and, if they are unable to repay the loan within three years, cut salaries by up to 20%. After the National Council passed the bill with 135 to 34 votes, the Council of States will debate it tomorrow before sending it back to the Federal Council.
