Kreis, 46, began coaching in Germany in 1997, after playing there for almost 20 years. In 2003, he joined Davos as an assistant coach, followed by head coaching duties in Chur, Lugano and ZSC. He won two championships with those teams.
After being in Germany from 2008 to 2014, he began a four-year stint with EV Zug, before moving back to Germany. This season, he coached the Schwenninger Wild Wings to 21 wins, 24 losses for ninth place in the DEL.
