IIHF World Junior Championship

Covid-19 has not only affected the NHL and the National League, but it now also had an impact on the U20 tournament.

As Chris Peters (Daily Faceoff) reported earlier, the IIHF tournament directorate met today to discuss the continuation of the tournament. The IIHF now confirms the reports of Peters and TSN's Bob McKenzie: the remainder of the tournament has been cancelled.

Czechia, Russia, and Team USA all had to forfeit their respective games as they were placed in quarantine after some of their members tested positive for Covid-19. The fast spread of the Omicron variant has led the IIHF Council to the decision to cancel the tournament in order to ensure the health and safety of the players.

"In our view, the cancellation of the tournament is the right decision," Lars Weibel, Director National Teams, states. "A fair tournament is no longer possible under the given conditions. The current situation and recent development of the pandemic simply no longer allows for it."
