27-year-old Backman played nine games for HPK of the Liiga last season. However, in mid-December, he then changed teams and suited up for BIK Karlskoga (HockeyAllsvenkan). Throughout his career, the forward mostly played in Sweden's second-tier league. He has signed a one-year contract with the Lions.
Ryan Hayes, for his part, will stay another year with GCK. He joined the Swiss League team in 2017 from Norwegian team Frisk Asker. In 45 games for GCK, he recorded 16 goals and 31 assists. Pascal Pelletier, who also suited up for the ZSC Lions last season, will not return to GCK.
