SC Bern recently changed their requirements for "retired numbers" and added the clause that they "explicitly reserve the right to grant exceptions in the case of particularly meritorious players". Plüss is now one of the players that will get their jersey retired despite not fulfilling the necessary requirements.

Martin Plüss made his National League debut with EHC Kloten during the 1994-95 season. After four years with Frölunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League, he joined SC Bern in 2008. For the Bears, mostly as the team's captain, Plüss suited up in a total of 536 games, in which he managed to put up 194 goals and 216 assists. In addition, he took part in four Olympic games and twelve World Championships with the Swiss national team, playing in a total of 236 international games.
