National League

While he has two years left on his development contract with the SCL Tigers, Akira Schmid has started looking around for another club, where he can take the next steps.

As he tells the Berner Zeitung, he is looking for a team abroad. Sweden might be an option, but according to Schmid, "North America is more likely". The goal is to find a club which will offer him the opportunity to further develop. Team manager Marco Bayer states that they will support whatever decision he might make, but that the goal remains that he will one day be able to play for them.

Schmid was recently drafted by the New Jersey Devils and will also take part in their development camp next month. The 18-year-old netminder was able to make his first appearance in a National League game in the placement round against EHC Kloten, posting a .912 save percentage. He mostly suited up for the team's U20 team, though.
