Rod had signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Sharks in March 2017. He did, however, not suit up for the NHL team but played a couple of games for their AHL affiliate this as well as last season. Yesterday, the San Jose Sharks placed Rod on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination.

"I made the decision not to extend the agreement in North America and to focus 100% on GSHC and my role as captain. This appointment and the contract extension in Geneva mean a lot to me, it shows that the cub trusts me in the long term," Rod explains. "It's been a complicated year but the management's plans for the coming years are ambitious and that's what pushed me to sign for so long." According to the Tribune de Genève, his deal includes an NHL out clause.
