In an interview with the Corriere del Ticino, Lugano's team manager Roland Habisreutinger said that their next goaltender will be a foreigner. According to Klaus Zaugg, Swedish goalie Lars Johansson is the front runner for the job. Johansson's contract with his Russian team is running out at the end of the season.

The 31-year-old currently plays for the KHL's CSKA Moskva. Last season, he posted the best goal against average (GAA) of the league (1.31). Before he moved to Russia, he led his former club Frölunda victory in the Champions Hockey League in 2015-16, celebrated the SHL championship, and was elected as the league's goaltender of the year, with the best GAA (1.74).
